The SQ8 TDI arrived at a moment when the large performance SUV coupe had become crowded with turbocharged petrol V8s and supercharged variants, each chasing the same headline numbers in broadly the same way. Audi chose a different path. A 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 diesel - the most powerful diesel engine in the European market at the time of its launch - and the result is a vehicle unlike anything else in the segment.
The numbers are extraordinary. 320kW and 900Nm of torque, available from just 1, 250rpm, through an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive with a rear-biased torque split. An electric-powered compressor, drawing from the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, eliminates turbo lag so completely that the concept becomes irrelevant - the SQ8 TDI simply pulls, immediately, from the moment the accelerator is touched. Zero to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. A governed top speed of 250km/h. On a long motorway run, fuel consumption that no petrol performance SUV can approach.
The SQ8's silhouette is the Q8 at its most resolved - a fastback roofline, 21-inch S-specific alloys, quad exhaust outlets, and an exterior presence that requires no badge to identify. Inside, the dual MMI touchscreen interface, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system, four-zone climate control, and adaptive air suspension with all-wheel steering create a cabin and chassis combination that is at once genuinely sporting and genuinely luxurious - without compromise in either direction.
